MentaI issues have HELPED to shape Tyson Fury into a heavyweight champion

  • Mike Tyson has been discussing the career of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury
  • The 53-year-old has suggested Fury's mental illness helps him in the boxing ring
  • The Gypsy King has previously admitted to trying to take his own life in 2016
  • The 31-year-old Fury has since fought back to claim the WBC heavyweight belt

Tyson Fury should embrace his mental illness and celebrate the fact he's not 'normal', according to Mike Tyson.

It was the final leg in a recovery that had seen him battle with depression after first becoming world champion in 2015.

Since then, the 31-year-old has had to get his weight under control, having ballooned to 28 stone.

And Fury has also spoken candidly about his thoughts about taking his own life, when he decided that he wanted to end it all by driving his car into a bridge.

However, 'Iron Mike', who has previously spoken about his own mental health issues, has made the questionable assertion that these incidents have been the making of the Gypsy King, not the breaking of him.

'With Tyson, if he didn't go through everything he's been through, he wouldn't be the person that he is today,' Tyson told Ring Magazine

'The mental health issues? That's why he's the greatest, because he's sick, and that's being real.

'People want him to be normal. Yeah, be normal and go on the f***ing welfare line.

'Tyson doesn't know what normal is. Tell him to stay the f*** away from normal; he wasn't meant to be normal.'

After shocking Wladimir Klitshcko in November 2015,  Fury was slapped with a backdated two-year ban by UK Anti-Doping.

During that period, Fury suffered from mental health issues, as well as alcohol and drugs problems.

In an interview earlier this year, he even revealed how close he came to taking his own life.

Speaking in a documentary on ITV, Fury said: 'One day I woke up and thought "today's the day I end it all".

'I was heading towards this bridge, I was going to smash the car into the bridge at very high speed, I just didn't have the ambition to live anymore.

'Before I got to the bridge I heard a voice saying 'don't do this, you're going to destroy your family's life' and I immediately pulled the car over and that was the first time I thought, "right, now or never. I need to get well immediately".'
